UPDATE ON MUM

EVENING OF 30TH APRIL 2007. “I’M NOT SO ANXIOUS TO GO NOW - BECAUSE LIFE IS NOW SO GOOD”.  SO SAID LITTLE MUM THIS EVENING AFTER ANOTHER LOVELY DAY.

THIS MORNING I WAS GREETED BY ANN WHO JOYFULLY ANNOUNCED, “SHE HAD TWO HELPINGS OF PORRIDGE THIS MORNING”.  IT WAS TRUE. MUM ATE THE BREAKFAST BOWL OF PORRIDGE BROUGHT TO HER AND THEN ASKED IF SHE COULD HAVE ANOTHER - WHICH SHE ALSO “ATE ALL UP” JUST LIKE GOLDILOCKS!

SHE REALLY IS ENJOYING THE FREEDOM FROM FEELING ILL WHICH HAS BEEN WITH HER FOR SO LONG. TODAY SHE SPENT THE MORNING PLANNING TO GO THROUGH THE DRAWERS TO DISPOSE OF ALL THE CLOTHES WHICH NOW DON’T FIT HER BY GIVING THEM TO THE SALVATION ARMY DROP-IN. THIS AFTERNOON SHE DID THE ROUNDS AGAIN, FIRST OF ALL GOING INTO THE LOUNGE TO SAY HELLO TO HER FELLOW RESIDENTS AND THEN INTO THE SHRUBBERY CONSERVATORY ROOM FOR A WHILE. AFTER THIS SHE WENT OUTDOORS TO ADMIRE THE FLOWERS AND ESPECIALLY THE WISTERIA WHICH GROWS AGAINST THE WALL OUTSIDE THE WINDOW OF HER ROOM. SHE CAN’T SEE IT FROM THE INSIDE BUT MARVELLED AT THE FLOWERS FROM THE SUNSHINE-WARMED PATIO OUTSIDE.

TONIGHT, OF COURSE, SHE WAS TIRED BUT CONTENTED AFTER HER LOVELY DAY.  SHE CHATTERED ENDLESSLY FROM 7PM UNTIL 8PM AS SHE WAITED FOR HER HORLICKS, AND WAS THEN GLAD TO SNUGGLE DOWN FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP - BUT NOT BEFORE SENDING LOVE TO YOU ALL.

I SEND MINE TOO,

TED.

A BIT OF CHAT

ST GEORGE’S RESIDENTIAL HOME

Hello from Ted,

I was walking back from St. George’s this morning and I just thought what a beautiful world Millom is in.  The views are magnificent - especially in the sunshine. And everything is so green now that Spring is here. The grounds of St. George’s have been filled with daffodils, but now these have given way to bluebells and, of course, there are the unbeatable dandelions - a lovely flower with its neatly regimented petals and glowing colour. More than once I have asked the Lord that if there is a Millom in heaven I would love to live there.

The landscapes around here never fail to thrill me with their beauty. It has its effect too.  Last week I went fishing and caught two lovely rainbow trout - about a pound weight each.  They would have made a nice meal, but as I removed the hook from their mouths I just knew that I had to put them back. I just couldn’s knock them on the head to kill them. I put them back into the water and when they had recovered - maybe from their astonishment at being put back - they leisurely flicked their tails and moved back into the deep water. How could I have killed them - the air was filled with the songs of countless birds, new-born lambs were bleating and frolicking as only they can and the air was like fresh wine - even though gentle rain was falling. It really was a breath of heaven.

I pumped up my bike tyres the other day in preparation for a sprint or two around the sea-wall when opportunity presents. The area is now a RSPB bird sanctuary, but forty or so years ago it was an intense industrial area given over to iron ore mining and iron casting.  But that passed away as the iron ore reserves were depleted and the industrial operation became unprofitable.  Since then the deeply scarred and damaged earth has become softened and overlaid with the return of natural growth and renewal and today the area is breathtakingly beautiful. What were once deep quarries are now filled with water and have become lakes - havens for all manner of wildlife. Upturned spoil heaps are now grassy mounds covered in summer with myriads of beautiful multi-coloured wild flowers. Old railway lines are red-dusted paths suitable for pedestrian or cyclist - but not cars. A safe haven for all who love to wander and enjoy the beauty. Sometimes my heart aches with all the beauty.

This part of the world is truly a beautiful place.

I could go on but that is enough enough from me for now.  What about your area and your interests? Share them with the family. We would love to hear from you.  It is a “family” blog.

Much love to you all,

Ted.
